Y2K to cause social calamity,economic chaos, warn experts |

Dr Arun Kumar, Lecturer, Information Technology, speaking on the Y2 problem said that 'we have been hearing many thins but understanding none. Y2Kis one of them'. He lucidly explained the problem pertaining to the year 2000, which he said was a world-wide phenomenon. He said years ago, in the dark ages of computer technology, computer scientists and programmers were faced with the twin issues of memory storage and computer speed. Both problems were expensive to be met. Hence,the programmers of yesteryear had decided on two-digit year format, i.e. 1999 was read as 99 and the century part was ignored. He linked the memory storage problem to that of a real estate problem, where by the availability of physical memory storage capacity was costly and scarce. It is a social calamity and economic chaos, which will take place as more and economic chaos, which will take place as more people around the world release their vulner ability the problem. |
